Costa Robbia Alta

The first mention of the pasture can be found in a document written by the Notary of the Republic of Venice, Andrea de Speciariis, dated 18 April 1573. On the crests of Monte Paularo you can admire the white partridges, obviously with the aid of binoculars. The main feature of this tetraonida is its formidable mimetic ability: from late autumn and throughout the winter its plumage is entirely white, except for the feathers of its tail. You can also watch ungulates and, in damp meadows and near groundwater discharges you often meet frogs, newts and fire salamanders. Sometimes the footprints left by a brown bear can also be seen.

Paularo (Ud)

From Paluzza you climb up to Ligosullo and, past the village, follow the signs to reach the Valdaier Castle; from here you climb on the right for around two hundred metres, at the fork you keep the right-hand side, then at the next fork you climb on the left. Past the small saddle you reach the Costa Robbia Alta hut.

And then...

Going back to the main road, you can go on the recommended hikes heading to the Valdaier Alpine farm. On the road leading to the farm, you can find the Valdajer castle (now a hotel-restaurant) built in 1460 by Konrad IV von Kraig, a baron of the Holy Roman Empire.

In the village downhill, Treppo Carnico, you can visit the Modern Art Gallery "Enrico De Cillia", which contains works by Giuseppe Zigaina, Toffolo Anzilquali, Giorgio Celiberti, Fred Pittino, Umberto Martina, Mario Sironi, Marino Marini, Aligi Sassu, as well as sculptures by Luciano Del Zotto, Benito Asquini and a bas-relief by Dino Basaldella. The gallery often hosts temporary art or photography shows as well.

In Salino you can see the spectacular waterfalls, going up the Chiarsò torrent you can find the Forra di Las Callas gorge and, on the road from Ravinis to Monte Pizzul, the Rio Nasa waterfall flows on volcanic rocks.

Worth seeing: in Paularo, Piazza Julia, with the masterpiece monument by Giobatta Segalla honouring the War Fallen and Missing of Paularo and the palaces "Calice-Gerometta-Screm" (16th century, the prototype of a Carnic house), "Fabiani-Linussio" (17th century, Linussio's abode, where Giosuè Carducci slept), Casa Tarussio (Côrt di Tarùsc) (17th century, a typical Carnic dwelling with wooden works by Sbrizzai and other carvers), "Morocutti" (1631), "Palazzo della Canonica" (1674), "Valesio-Calice" (1591). The Mozartina is also worth a visit: it is a small music museum with a refined collection of old instruments.

For archaeology enthusiasts, the relics of a necropolis have recently been found in Misincinis.

Here there are a few religious buildings:

the parish church of (patron saints) Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia (1750), frescoed with an absolute masterpiece by painter Antonio Schiavi and with a wonderful crucifix, the baptistery from the 16th century and the organ of 1764;

the church of Santa Maria Maggiore (1300) with a splendid wooden altar from 1522;

the church of San Giovanni Battista (1400);

the church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria Martire (1400) with an ancient medieval belfry and an altar from the 17th century;

the deconsecrated church of Sant'Antonio (1674);

the Cappella dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano (1688);

The church of San Pietro (1715), with a precious painting depicting San Pietro attributed to Nicola Grassi;

The Sacello di Santa Maria di Loreto (1745), a rare example of architecture with an octagonal base;

The Santuario di Maria SS. Ausiliatrice del Monte Castoia (1870) with frescoes by Giacomo Monai from Nimis and the legendary stone with the image of the Madonna with child Jesus engraved on it.
