Col dei S'cios

The toponym Col Dei S’Cios derives from the fossil shells (“s’cios” in the local dialect) that used to be found here. The view is breath-taking owing to the hollows and humps that alternate against the background of Monte Cavallo.

And then...

From Malga Col dei S'cios you can drive through the long Cansiglio-Cavallo hogback on a partially bumpy dirt road and reach the Piancavallo plateau (CAI trails no. 981-982-984-990).

In Polcenigo you can visit the old town centre, a member of the club Borghi più belle d'Italia (a club of the nicest Italian villages), with the remains of the old castle, dated 963 D.C., an 18th-century building with a baroque facade, and the Museo dell'Arte Culinaria (museum of culinary art). Next to the Livenza springs you can visit the church of the Santissima, evidence of the Friulian cult of water and springs, which were thought to have miraculous powers linked to fertility and childbirth. The legend has it that emperor Theodosius had a vision of the Trinity in this very area and that he had a sacred building erected here, to be later replaced by a church founded by convent friars from Venice in the 16th century. In Gorgazzo you can see the springs of the namesake river, a tributary to the Livenza, with its vivid blue waters, an area of great environmental value.

The damp area of the Archaeological Park of "Palù di Livenza" is very interesting owing to the remains of a stilt-house village and countless finds dating from the Upper Palaeolithic, but also for its environmental importance. The site is one of the ancient settlements on the Alps that are candidates to become part of the world cultural heritage protected by UNESCO.

Before climbing up, in Caneva you can see the remains of the old surrounding walls and the old town centre with the fortified tower of the medieval castle. The villas Frova, Carli, Luccheschi and Damiani di Stevenà are examples of stately country houses (19th century). The church of S. Lucia (11th century) contains Renaissance frescoes. The Santuario della Madonna del Persego, the church of San Tommaso Apostolo (with three altarpieces by Francesco da Milano) are also worth a visit. The Museo del ciclismo (cycling museum) dedicated to Toni Pessot and the Museo del minatore (miner's museum) in Fratta are both very interesting.

The Cansiglio wood and the whole area up to the Pian Cansiglio plateau, in particular to the Bus de la Lum, has preserved the relics of a hunters' camp dated around 11,000 B.C.

Local food products are also recommended, such as Caneva's FigoMoro, the Alpine farm cheese, the extra virgin oil, the red wines and Caneva's "verdisio", a white wine made from an autochthonous vine variety.

Sacile is also home to numerous architecturally and historically interesting buildings: the colonnaded palaces in the Venetian style of Piazza del Popolo, Palazzo Ragazzoni-Flangini-Biglia (15th century), with a cycle of frescoes by Francesco Montemezzano, Palazzo Bellavitis (17th century), embellished by terraced Venetian floors and, inside it, a pit and a 50-plus-year-old white oleander, and finally, the fortified towers of Prà Castelvecchio and Largo Salvadorini, relics of the 14th-century ramparts.

The religious buildings are also remarkable: the Duomo di San Nicolò (1496), the church of the Madonna della Pietà (17th century), the deconsecrated church of San Gregorio (16th century), the Oratorio di San Giuseppe (1600).
