Alpine farms in the Sauris - Val Pesarina - Ovaro hogback

The Alpine farms of this area are interconnected by high-altitude roads that allow motorists to admire both the steep slopes of the Monte Bivera southward, and the jagged peaks of the Pesarine Dolomites northward. The richness of open areas favours the presence of the deer and of other ungulates, in addition to the opportunity to enjoy close views of birds of prey sailing astride the peaks.

Gerona

The Alpine pasture area, consisting of different environments – pastures, buildings, wood, water puddles – is frequented by several bird species, such as the black redstart and the yellowhammer, which find here the best feeding and nesting conditions. The large number of small birds, though, draws ...

Pieltinis

The pastures of the Pieltinis farm embrace the whole eastern side of the namesake mountain and the talweg under the peak presents one of the richest moors of the entire Carnic Alp ridge. On the meadows bordering the farm, in addition to the monk's rhubarb, we also find the slender foxtail, the ...

Vinadia Grande

The shrubs of green alder are an ideal habitat for the grouse. The male black grouse has a characteristic lyre-shaped tail and blue-black feathers, except in the undersides of its wings and on the side of the neck, where it is white.

The farm has been recently refurbished, while preserving the same architectural features of the past. The Malins lake is not far from here. Since it is shallow and has a rich aquatic vegetation, there are no fish and the fauna mainly consists of newts. The picturesque surrounding Alpine landscape ...

Ielma di Sopra

On the main door of the Alpine farm carvings and initials can be seen, which reveal the artistic qualities and the feelings of the successive farmers and herdsmen who have worked here.

Ielma di Sotto

As in a few other dairy huts of the region, in Ielma di Sotto the traditional milk-processing cauldron support, called "musse", has been preserved. The feet of the Colle di San Pietro, above the hollow where the Alpine farm lies, are dominated by larches, spruces and a few beeches. Why not looking ...

San Giacomo

The entirely renovated dairy hut mirrors the old architecture. In particular, the stones that made up the original masonry have been meticulously preserved.

Losa

The Losa farm, owing to its magnificence, plays an important role in the Alpine farm sector. At a few metres from the farm we find a mostly dry branch of the Rio Losa river, near its banks we can admire the alpenrose, or the hairy Alpine rose, the winter heath or the spring gentian.

Valuta

The abundant green alder trees around this Alpine farm provide the ideal environment for the grazing of numerous goats. The presence of the ground cistus is particularly interesting: it is an evergreen low-growing shrub with small, finely toothed leaves and with delicate pink-hued flowers.

Monteriù

From the top of Col Gentile, on whose NW side the farm lies, the view of the green ridge of the Losa, Navarza, and Torondon mountains and on the glacial valleys that cut through it on the southern side is really magnificent. In the background, the Creta Forata with its sharp and raw pinnacles.

Navas

Lying at a comparably low altitude, its pastures are grazed between mid-May and mid-October. The grassy saddle of Navas (1,025 m) overlooks the Degano valley, northward, and is dominated by the calcareous massifs of the Monti di Volaia and by the Monte Coglians to the north, while you can admire ...
