Monteriù

From the top of Col Gentile, on whose NW side the farm lies, the view of the green ridge of the Losa, Navarza, and Torondon mountains and on the glacial valleys that cut through it on the southern side is really magnificent. In the background, the Creta Forata with its sharp and raw pinnacles.

Site

Socchieve (Ud)

From Ampezzo you drive on toward Sauris and, two hundred metres after the short tunnel past the dam, climb up on the right toward Lateis. Leaving the hamlet behind, you continue on a mostly paved road, and, keeping the right-hand side at the first fork, you reach the ford on the Pieltinis torrent. After crossing it, you descend on the right along the forest trail that skirts the torrent for a short distance and, after crossing three fords, you climb up again to reach Monteriù, being sure to keep right at the two forks along the way.

And then...

Continuing along the way, you go past the Valuta and Forchia Alpine farms, then descend to Ovaro or, climbing on the left, you reach the Losa farm.

The villages on the valley floor are certainly worth a stopover and offer many opportunities for sightseeing.

In Sauris, with houses and cottages built with the "Blockbau" technique (overlapping logs with joined notched corners) and roofs covered with wood shingles, the Sauranolanguage, of German descent, survives to this day, as well as a number of traditional events. The ethnographic centre "Haus van der Zahre", housing the exhibition "La storia riemersa - Cimeli di guerra / Khriekhgedeinkhn" (The re-emerged history - War memorabilia) and the Historiographic Centre – S. Osvaldo Museum, which depicts everyday life through seven centuries, are both really interesting. Here are a few craft workshops and food shops selling the local foodstuffs, including the PGI raw ham, the "speck", and the craft beer. On a natural and environmental note, you can admire the lake with the majestic hydroelectric dam, while in the bordering woods roe deer, deer, chamois, martens, skunks, beech martens, squirrels, dormice, voles, black grouses and capercaillies, various diurnal and nocturnal raptors and, lately, also lynxes and brown bears can be seen.

In Ampezzo are the Pinacoteca Davanzo art gallery at Palazzo Unfer, with an interesting collection of works of art, and the geological museum, where numerous rocks and fossils are displayed, which are evidence of the evolution of the earth over 400 million years. Other buildings of religious and historic interest are the church of San Daniele, the church of the Santissima Trinità (in Oltris) and the Palazzo Beorchia - Nigris of the 17th century, a typical example of Carnic architecture.

In Pesariis – in the municipality of Prato Carnico in the Pesarina valley – an itinerary in the village centre has been set up, including clocks and two monumental sundials. Pesariis is called the village of clocks because the factory of the Solari brothers was founded here. Casa Bruseschi, a typical Carnic mansion from the 17th-18th centuries, contains period furniture and tools on display.

In Ovaro and in the surrounding hamlets you can visit: the "Museo Ex Miniera di Carbone" (a museum of the former coalmine) and the "Ex Miniera Creta d'Oro" (a former mine), which depict mining at the turn of last century, in the hamlet of Cludinico, the "Museo del Legno e della Segheria Veneziana" (Museum of wood and of the Venetian sawmill) in Aplis, the stone mill of Baus, the Namontet necropolis, the house of a hundred windows in Mione, and a few mansions in Luint.
