Valuta

The abundant green alder trees around this Alpine farm provide the ideal environment for the grazing of numerous goats. The presence of the ground cistus is particularly interesting: it is an evergreen low-growing shrub with small, finely toothed leaves and with delicate pink-hued flowers.

And then...

Climbing down from the Valuta hut, you leave behind the detour to Casera Monteriù on the left, and descend to the point where the Novarza and Pieltinis torrents meet, then you climb up to reach the road that from Lateis di Sauris leads to the farms of the area.

In the old village of Sauris, with houses and cottages built with the "Blockbau" technique (overlapping logs with joined notched corners), whose roofs are covered with wood shingles, the Sauran, a German dialect, survives to this day, as well as a number of traditional events. Here you can visit the ethnographic centre "Haus van der Zahre" and its exhibition "La storia riemersa - Cimeli di guerra / Khriekhgedeinkhn" (The re-emerged history - War memorabilia), as well as the Historiographic Centre – S. Osvaldo Museum which depicts everyday life over seven centuries. Several craft workshops can be found in the streets of the village. The local foodstuffs – the PGI raw ham, the "speck", and the craft beer – are much appreciated. On a natural and environmental note, you can admire the lake with the majestic hydroelectric dam, while in the bordering woods roe deer, deer, chamois, martens, skunks, beech martens, squirrels, dormice, voles, black grouses and capercaillies, various diurnal and nocturnal raptors and, lately, also lynxes and brown bears can be seen.

In Ampezzo you can visit the Pinacoteca Davanzo art gallery, at Palazzo Unfer, with an interesting collection of works of art, and the geological museum, where a rich repertoire of rocks and fossils covering a time span of 400 million years is displayed. Other buildings of religious and historic interest are the church of San Daniele, the church of the Santissima Trinità (in Oltris) and the Palazzo Beorchia - Nigris of the 17th century, a typical example of Carnic architecture.

Pesariis – in the municipality of Prato Carnico, in the Pesarina valley – is famous for being the village of clocks, because here the factory of the Solari brothers was founded. Thanks to an itinerary in the village centre, you can admire clocks and two monumental sundials, which represent the evolution of the local industry. Casa Bruseschi, a typical Carnic mansion from the 17th-18th centuries, contains period furniture and tools on display.

In Ovaro you can visit the "Museo Ex Miniera di Carbone" (a museum of the former coalmine) and the "Ex Miniera Creta d'Oro" (a former mine), which depict mining at the turn of last century, in the hamlet of Cludinico, the "Museo del Legno e della Segheria Veneziana" (Museum of wood and of the Venetian sawmill) in Aplis, the stone mill of Baus, the Namontet necropolis, the house of a hundred windows in Mione, and a few mansions in Luint.
