Fossa di Sarone

The buildings of this Alpine farm are surrounded by the beech wood that takes on a rich variety of colours toward the end of the Alpine grazing season. In the Pre-Alpine farms the grazing season often extends to early November. The Fossa di Sarone farm lies at the feet of the Collat, a moderately-high mountain that overlooks the plain and extends to two adjacent dolines, Fossa di Sarone and Folador.

And then...

The hogback extends from the Fossa di Stevenà farm to the Piancavallo plateau, the Fossa di Sarone farm is also on this hogback, which is run through by a connection road, sometimes appearing as a bumpy dirt road.

In Caneva the remains of the picturesque surrounding walls and of the old town centre with the fortified tower, a relic of the old castle, remain. The villas Frova, Carli, Luccheschi and Damiani di Stevenà are splendid examples of stately country houses (19th century). The Santuario della Madonna del Persego, the church of San Tommaso Apostolo (with three altarpieces by Francesco da Milano) and the church of S. Lucia (11th century), with its Renaissance frescoes, are all worth a visit. The Museo del ciclismo (cycling museum) dedicated to Toni Pessot and the Museo del minatore (miner's museum) in Fratta are both worth seeing.

In the surroundings, in the Cansiglio wood, relics of a hunters' camp dating from 11,000 B.C. have been unearthed.

The local food products are exquisite: Caneva's FigoMoro, Alpine farm cheese, extra virgin oil, red wines and Caneva's "verdisio", a white wine made from an autochthonous vine variety.

Furthermore, the Archaelogical Park of "Palù di Livenza" is interesting for the relics of a stilt house village and for countless finds probably dating from the Upper Palaeolithic. The environmental value of this area is also significant. The site is among the candidates to be included in the list of ancient settlements on the Alps to become part of the world cultural heritage protected by UNESCO.

Near Polcenigo there lies the hamlet of Gorgazzo, famous for its spring, a spectacular intensely blue-coloured water pool, a site of unfathomable natural value.

Sacile has several points of interest:

Piazza del Popolo, with its colonnaded palaces in the Venetian style, Palazzo Ragazzoni-Flangini-Biglia (15th century), which houses a cycle of frescoes by Francesco Montemezzano depicting the family history, the fortified towers of Prà Castelvecchio and Largo Salvadorini, relics of the old 14th century ramparts; Palazzo Bellavitis (17th century), with terraced Venetian floors. In the inner yard there is a pit and a 50-plus-year-old white oleander.

The town also has several remarkable religious buildings: the Duomo di San Nicolò (1496), the church of the Madonna della Pietà (17th century), the deconsecrated church of San Gregorio (16th century), and the Oratorio di San Giuseppe (1600).
