Gerona

The Alpine pasture area, consisting of different environments – pastures, buildings, wood, water puddles – is frequented by several bird species, such as the black redstart and the yellowhammer, which find here the best feeding and nesting conditions. The large number of small birds, though, draws the attention of their most tireless predator, the sparrowhawk.

Sauris (Ud)

From Ampezzo you continue toward Sauris and, not far after the dam, climb up on the right toward Lateis. Leaving the hamlet behind, you continue on a mostly paved road, and, while keeping the right-hand side at the first fork, you cross the ford of the Pieltinis brook; you climb on the left and reach a second fork, where you continue on the left and, after a few hairpin bends, you climb up to the Gerona hut.

And then...

Continuing from the hut, you reach the Pieltinis Alpine farm, and from here to the namesake mountain (CAI trail no. 206).

Sauris is certainly worth a visit: this old village with houses and cottages built with the "Blockbau" technique (overlapping logs with joined notched corners) with roofs covered with wood shingles. The Saurano language, of German origins, is culturally interesting. In the village you can visit the ethnographic centre "Haus van der Zahre" housing the exhibition "La storia riemersa - Cimeli di guerra / Khriekhgedeinkhn" (The re-emerged history - War memorabilia) and the Historiographic Centre – S. Osvaldo Museum, which depict everyday life through seven centuries, as well as several craft workshops. Famous local foodstuffs are the PGI raw ham, the speck, and the craft beer.

From a natural and environmental point of view, we would like to mention the namesake lake with the majestic dam, while in the bordering woods roe deer, deer, chamois, martens, skunks, beech martens, squirrels, dormice, voles, black grouses and capercaillies, various diurnal and nocturnal raptors and, lately, also lynxes and brown bears can be seen.

In Ampezzo, the Pinacoteca Davanzo picture gallery inside Palazzo Unfer, is worth mentioning: an evocative collection of art works and the geological museum, with a rich repertoire of rocks and fossils covering a time span of 400 million years. Other buildings of religious and historic interest are the St. Daniel Church, the Holy Trinity Church (in Oltris) and the Palazzo Beorchia - Nigris of the 17th century, a typical example of Carnic architecture.

In the Pesarina valley, in Pesariis (a hamlet of Prato Carnico), the village of clocks, where the factory of the Solari brothers was founded, you can admire clocks and two monumental sundials representing the evolution of the local industry. Casa Bruseschi is in Pesariis as well: a typical Carnic aristocratic residence from the 17th-18th centuries with period furniture and tools.
